On this memorable train journey you will experience the romance of train travel, especially when riding through some of the country’s most scenic regions (the Sierra Nevada and Colorado Rockies). Enjoy the fascinating commentary about the history and significance of the sights you see and stay in comfortable hotels every evening.

1st Day: San Francisco
We board our plane for the flight to San Francisco. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel where we get together for a delicious welcome dinner and tour orientation.

2nd Day: San Francisco
Today we learn why so many people have left their hearts in San Francisco with a full day tour of this fabulous city. We see the Golden Gate Bridge, Mission Dolores, the Palace of Fine Arts, Nob Hill, Fisherman’s Wharf, Lombard Street – the “crookedest street in the world,” the magnificent views afforded from Telegraph Hill and, of course, the famed cable cars. We are treated to dinner in one of Fisherman’s Wharf’s better restaurants.

3rd Day: Reno, Nevada
We board Amtrak’s famous “California Zephyr” for a delightful train ride to the Lake Tahoe area. You’ll be in awe of the spectacular panoramic views, especially as the train enters the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountain range. Accommodations for the next 2 evenings are in Reno, Nevada.

4th Day: Reno, Nevada
We enjoy a full day tour of Lake Tahoe. Exploring Tahoe’s towns that surround the lake might just make you feel as if you’re traveling through modernized downtowns from the Old West era. A highlight of the tour is a relaxing and scenic cruise on Lake Tahoe, America’s second deepest lake. The huge lake is remarkably clear and blue and our cruise provides us with one magnificent view of the area after another. Pockets of shade sheltered snow look down on wildflower strewn meadows; lovely homes and marinas that line the shores; partially hidden shorelines are set amidst a backdrop of lush mountain scenery. A beautiful day indeed!

5th Day: Salt Lake City, Utah
Today’s drive has us leaving Reno and driving east, until we arrive in the Salt Lake City, Utah area where we enjoy tonight’s accommodations and a tasty dinner.

6th Day: Green River, Utah
We take a tour of Salt Lake City which became the home of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) who travelled west seeking religious freedom. They found it here and built their first Temple and the area surrounding it (Temple Square) became the center of this fascinating city. We will see Historic Temple Square, the Tabernacle – home of the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Lion House, and the historical residences, including Beehive House – which was Brigham Young’s home in the mid-1800s. Mid afternoon finds us driving to Green River, Utah where we have accommodations and dinner tonight.

7th Day: Vail, Colorado
Another delightful train journey is planned for us today as we again step aboard the “California Zephyr,” this time taking us from Utah into the Rocky Mountains. You’ll get a great idea about America’s purple mountain majesties as our train approaches the magnificent Colorado Rocky Mountains – views that must be seen to be believed. We arrive in the charming Bavarian style town of Vail where we check into our hotel. We are not only treated to a fabulous dinner but we are given time to stroll through the lovely flower-laden European style village.

8th Day: Denver, Colorado
Following breakfast we take the short ride to Silver Plume where we board yet another railroad – the Historic Georgetown Railroad – for a ride that takes you through the heart of the Rocky Mountains. It affords us with one spectacular view after another and will take you back to a time when railroads ruled America and mining was a way of life and outlaws littered the land. We then leave the foothills of the Rockies and continue on to Denver, where we take a mini-tour seeing, among other things, Larimer Square, the State Capitol, the financial center, United States Mint and the Victorian homes of Capitol Hill. A delicious farewell dinner precedes our checking into our hotel for the evening.

9th Day: Fly Home
Following breakfast we transfer to the airport for our return flight home.
